I am not a defender but I interviewed my friend to write the Maverik Caliber defense lacrosse shaft review. Maverik has done a great job upgrading the Caliber to better quality. It’s one of the best lacrosse shafts for D-pole players and has an amazing grip.

Although both have dual tapered wall technology, the 2024 model has an even thicker wall than the Maverik Caliber S23. It’s also lighter and stiffer with minimal flex points. 

Besides, the Maverik’s signature shape with angled grooves fits the thumbs of defenders and long stick midfielders to provide controlled cradling and shooting. Most intermediate and advanced players are habitual to this shape and enjoy the grip. 

However, new players who haven’t played with Maverik sticks will need time to adjust to its aggressive design. They will need about a week of practice to get a natural feel. Once you get used to it, it will provide exceptional control.

Shape, Material, and Weight

Before writing the Maverik Caliber defense lacrosse shaft review, I tested it for about a week. It has a traditional concave shape, and I love how natural it felt in my hands.

The deep concave facets along the shaft’s length with the bead-blasted matte finish provided enhanced fingertip control. The grip was neither too slick nor tacky for me. So I didn’t feel unnecessary slip, even in rainy weather. 

It allowed me to move upfield to initiate clear as an LSM while maintaining control during hard checks. The Dual Wall Taper technology makes it durable enough to take a beating without adding unnecessary weight.  

At 12.6 ounces, the shaft is on the lighter side for a defensive model, but it retains a solid, balanced feel. It allowed me to throw accurate, powerful checks without compromising my recovery speed. 

Despite being weightless, the scandium-titanium alloy offers exceptional resistance to dents and bends. Its durable build makes it dependable for tough defensive plays and high-impact situations. Thus, it could last a lifetime of hard checks.

However, if you like lighter carbon shafts, you should try ECD Carbon Pro 3.0 with a Kevlar finish. It’s 5.2 oz vs 12.6 oz and has the best quality. 

Flex and End Cap

The Maverik Caliber defense lacrosse shaft strikes a great balance between stiffness and flex. I easily threw strong poke checks to the opponent’s offense. My Maverik Caliber Defense lacrosse shaft review does not suggest that it’s a flexible shaft, while it has 6-8% flex. 

Therefore, I sometimes felt slight jitters in my hands when taking direct checks. Yet, the slight give worked to my advantage. It absorbed impact, reducing the strain on my hands during long games.

The flex points were also beneficial for adding minimal whip to long clears or delivering accurate passes under pressure. It allowed me to snap checks with better control while maintaining enough stiffness for powerful impact. 

The stiffness felt natural and responsive, enhancing my ability to make smooth transitions between defense and clearing plays. In my observation, it’s stiffer than the Maverik Mission Black but has more flex than the STX Sc-Ti X shaft. 

It also has ABE3 adjustable butt end for customization, which gave me perfect hand placement for optimal leverage. It stayed locked in place without shifting, even during groundball scrambles or delivering hard checks.

I positioned it about a half inch below the standard end placement, which felt just right. However, the silicone liner needed slight readjustments in humid conditions. 

Aesthetics

The Maverik Caliber defense lacrosse shaft has a sleek, minimalist design that reflects its premium build. The matte finish provides a polished, modern look to both color variants. 

The “Caliber” logo, positioned near the end where the shaft connects to the head, is printed in a bold square-like font, adding a touch of personality. It’s minimalistic, yet esthetic. 

On the opposite side, about one-third of the way down, there is a rounded Maverik logo designed with a greyish-silver emblem. Thus, the design looks subtle but striking against the matte surface.
